Cognitive Therapy - Cognitive Therapy is premised on the theory that one’s thoughts initiate symptoms of anxiety or depression. Identifying the specific thoughts that precipitate the specific symptoms and assisting the patient with learning to replace irrational thoughts (cognitions) with rational ones can produce effective results.

Below is a brief example in which one situation can elicit anxiety for different reasons.

Panic Disorder What if I get into this elevator and it gets stuck. I’ll have a panic attack.
GAD This elevator is very old. I wonder if the cable will break.
Social Phobia There is only one other person in this elevator. I’m afraid she’ll talk to me.
OCD This elevator is very old. I’m sure the buttons have been touched by thousands of people. I’m afraid to push them because they are dirty and I may get ill from being contaminated.
PTSD There’s a man in this elevator and I’m by myself. I’m afraid he’ll attack me.
